Big Island Paradise Life

We got Nothin' to Pack 'em with
Back to Full Blog

The color you get in fall can be more brilliant to admire than our regular day in Paradise, as fleeting as autumn may be for you.

Can you imagine trees that only lose leaves because it grows and new leaves force them off? It's a kind of forever summer. Not to suggest we have something much of the southern US doesn't have but after a year the memory of autumn becomes richer, not dimmer to me.

The different joys of autumn contain the simple joys worth cherishing. There were the lazy Saturdays when in the 60s my lady and I walked the sidewalks and parks of Greeley Colorado, pushing the leaves while stepping, courting days before our years of marrainge since. Mountain Colorado Aspen, Colorado plains cottonwoods, the deep and flourishing forests of the Adirondacks and Catskills of upstate New York.

Hawaii is the most southern state in the United States. Fall is most distant here than anywhere. And this is my second time missing it. So there you have it. Something we don't have in Paradise.

Any unique thoughts about autumn for you?

For years fall meant falling leaves, apple cider and candy apples, halloween costumes and too much candy, cold nights and warm days... but now that I live in the desert, the nights are not that cold, the days are still hot, and the last of the rattlers are sunning themselves on the warm rocks and asphalt getting ready to hibernate. Last week we had a new fawn at the pond with its watchful mother, born totally out of season for most deer country, but normal for around here. My husband and I took the boys (7 and 4) on a long hike up the ridgeline and down into a deep canyon today. They clamored up boulders and threw rocks over the ridges. They chased lizards and grasshoppers and wore us out. We smiled as they noticed their dry swimming hole from the summer monsoons, and found their previous rock piles for intended homeword journeys. Seasons are often about childhood memories. I think of the smells of pumpkin pies and homemade applesauce, so tomorrow we will make pumpkin cupcakes and applesauce from Benson apples. I want the boys to have something of the season as I remember it. We always do jack-o-lanterns with the grandchildren a few days before Halloween so they can take them home, and then for days we have coyotes around eating the remains that we throw down into the canyon. You know, coyotes are like children, they find a pile of yummies and start howling and barking in their laughing tones to celebrate.

So I guess, like you, I miss Indiana autumns, the occasional frost, the trees dropping their leaves like paintdrops that we gathered, and put in parafin, or raked into huge piles for bonfires. I miss my friends and the sense of well being that having a happy childhood leaves, but I also love the desert. I spent my teen years in San Francisco, where it always seemed cold and damp, seasonless, and I'd much rather be here, carefully watching out where I step on warm days, and listening to the night. I will pass up fall for spring and summer year round.
I do love fall but it passes quickly and then comes winter. Uck!
I suppose you miss the leaves falling and such but honestly, I would pass it up for paradise!

Whispered Promise,
Guess I was into a glass half empty the morning I posted. Thank you for the positive tone. Paradise is something that MUST last and fall is not such a condition.
