Big Island Paradise Life

 Rescue Out of Place
Back to Full Blog

The total cost of fire in the United States is defined to be the combination of losses found in the actual loss in fires, the money spent to minimize loss when fighting fires, and the costs in containing, detecting, and suppressing them. For the year 2005 the total cost for all fifty states was just shy of $300 billion. Over time, the actual costs due to fire have experienced a dependable but gradual decrease annually.

As for the Big Island of Hawaii, our fire hydrants suffer from lack of use. Poor fellow. Stuff just doesn't ever get bone dry here.

hi Gecko! just saw you out running around, thought I'd drop in. You know, one of these days I'm coming to Hawaii, and when I do, I'm gonna swing by! so, if you hear some female Tarzanian yell, you'll know it's me!

Hawaii is my dream place to visit! You're lucky about not having fires. The hydrant looks lonely & abandoned.

Well Bella, if you hear me scurrying to my bedroom - it'll be because you almost caught me not suitably dressed..

Secret,
That's why we dropped everything and came out here to live. We hadn't even visited prior to moving here. The Big Island, called Hawaii, is very rural. It would surprise you to know it has the fifth largest cattle ranch in America. Unknown to most, all the Beaches on Hawaii must be open to the public whether they are privately owned or not. So there have been days my wife and I have gone to the best resorts here in bathing suites, wandered down to the beach and enjoyed ourselves. Our house is open to you should a shoe string is all you have to travel on.

When I lived in Texas, the folks there said that the Garden of Eden was in the Hill Country. Guess they had never been to Hawaii.

Sinann,

I've been all over the place and have found reasons not to be completely happy everywhere. So what does that say?

Where you live sure sounds like a place that I wouldn't mind visiting for awhile. It was snowing here AGAIN yesterday!

celtic,
Before you know it, the weather there will be just as refreshing as you remember. But we have an extra bedroom here if you opt out of the continental US>

Yes another reason to be sure. Somehow I wish I could capture the ease and splendor of waking in the morning, another morning with all the windows wide open all night every night, to the low seventies. Oh, to slip on a pair of trunks and grab the keys and 30 minutes later I'm in the surf.....taking in all the gentle beauty around me....any day.

Could have put that hydrant to work today although its been really wet here...it's windy and the fire just took off. So good to come see you again. I always liked the peacefulness here. Hope all is well in your world

Misty: Fine. Better pull out a fresh package of Marshmellows.

Yea, it works. Where I took the picture there were signs that it had been blown out. I'd put it at even money though. Occasionally we get grass fires covering many acres, even at times stretching for miles. The island is more like cattle country than most outsiders suspect. often we let fires burn where houses are not threatened. Three months later there is not a sign of burn. Thanks Legs

Gecko --- no fires in Hawaii??... really? So... how is it, living in Paridise?

"I've been all over the place and have found reasons not to be completely happy everywhere. So what does that say?"

I'll tell you what that says......'it describes me to a T.' And, so, the comment grabbed me. It'll probably roll around in my head for a few weeks/months. It tells volumes....yes?

Ice.
It says you are human.
How much worse is it to live in paradise and over time don't quite see things the way I used to see them. Now that I've been here awhile it aint all roses.
